The title of the post which is the announcement on the Prague metro translates to "Please finish exiting and boarding, the doors are closing" and triggers some of the most powerful nostalgia for anyone who has spent time in Prague. While studying in Prague last spring, I had the privilege to become familiar with its incredibly helpful public transportation system. Since Prague public transport is so popular among locals and tourists alike, I wanted to do a post containing a few fast facts about the environmental benefits of using public transport over cars in the US and elsewhere.

Hold on tight, and don't miss your stop!

1. Public transportation use in the United States saves 4.2 billion gallons of gasoline annually. (www.apta.com)

2. A single commuter switching his or her commute to public transportation can reduce a household’s carbon emissions by 10 percent and up to 30 percent if he or she eliminates a second car. (www.apta.com)

3. A single commuter switching his or her commute to public transportation can reduce a household’s carbon emissions by 10 percent and up to 30 percent if he or she eliminates a second car. (www.ibtimes.co.uk)

4. Heavy rail transit such as subways and metros produce on average 76% lower greenhouse gas emissions per passenger mile than an average single-occupancy vehicle (SOV). Light rail systems produce 62% less and bus transit produces 33% less. (US DOT)

5. Public transportation can foster compact development which can help reduce GHG emissions in ways commonly associated with suburban sprawl. (US DOT)

6. Public transportation use helps avoid road congestion which is where many unnecessary greenhouse gasses are emitted as cars sit idly. (US DOT)

Not only does public transportation save energy and contribute to cleaner air, but I find it to be much more relaxing and fun than driving. Especially while in another country, opt for public transport to immerse yourself in everyday culture rather than grabbing an Uber or taxi. I already miss the sounds of the tram and metro announcements in Prague...
